Until We Have Faces
2009, Mixed Media
The songs that I sing ride a sea of silences
May the sea convey me, until we have faces.
My time is made up from continuances
Span between the islands, until we have faces.
Love makes room in time, birds will sound the sky
I rest in my friend’s eye and see
That the Song needs a soul to know life’s mysteries
I will mirror you, it will have to do until we have faces.
(Angela Melander, 1994)
Roman Caesar has created a room installation using elements drawn from the concepts of the Uncanny in psychoanalysis in relation to time and the photograph. He is fascinated by the ideas of otherness at the heart of human-like figures and mirror reflections. His project allows the viewer to immerse into a visual environment and to play an active role in piecing the parts together.
The installation consists of several projections, mirrors, a mannequin as well as the artist’s full-body plaster cast. A live-video-feed of a framed photograph on the wall is being projected and reflected multiple times. By stepping in front of the camera the viewer is given the opportunity to change the visualisation of the room.
The shift from observation to that of participation sets up a dialogue between reality and imagination, familiarity and strangeness, presence and past.
